A variety of energy, water, and carbon calculators are available online.  Links to the tools are provided below.




Energy Star Target Finder: A no-cost online tool that enables architects and building owners to set energy targets and receive an EPA energy performance score for projects during the design process.

LEED Green Power Calculator: Enter the LEED type and respective information to receive a custom summary report illustrating points available through the LEED Energy and Atmosphere Green Power Credit. This calculator will also show you the environmental impact of the electricity a project uses.

Sustainable by Design (window shading and solar calculators): A suite of shareware design tools on sustainable energy topics; includes sun angle tools, window tools, panel shading, and climate data.

PVWattsTM: NREL's PVWattsTM calculator determines the energy production and cost savings of grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) energy systems throughout the world. It allows homeowners, installers, manufacturers, and researchers to easily develop estimates of the performance of hypothetical PV installations.

PV, Solar Hot Water, and Wind Estimator: A quick online calculator that estimates the cost and energy savings when implementing renewable energy technology for a particular location.



Building Energy and Software Directory, EERE, DOE: This directory provides information on 404 building software tools for evaluating energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainability in buildings.

Lawrence Berkeley Lab Energy Software (EnergyPlus, DOE-2, Radiance, etc.): Includes a collection of software developed by Environmental Energy Technology Division (EETD) that helps design more energy-efficient buildings, audits energy use in buildings, examines the economics of sustainable projects, and models components of building systems.

e-QUEST, DOE: e-QUEST is a comparative analysis tool of building designs and technologies by applying energy use simulations. DOE-2 is an energy analysis program that can predict the energy use and cost for all types of buildings.

Energy Design Tools (HEED, Solar 5.7, and Climate Consultant 5): Collection of energy design tools offered by University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Software is available for free download.

Building Design Advisor: The BDA is built around an object-oriented representation of the building and its context, which is mapped onto the corresponding representations of multiple tools and databases. It then acts as a data manager and process controller, automatically preparing input to simulation tools and integrating their output in ways that support multi-criterion decision making.


Integrated Environmental Solutions: Performance modeling software suite appropriate for new building and renovation projects that allows designers to test different options, identify best passive solutions, compare low-carbon technologies, and draw conclusions on energy use, CO2 emissions, occupant comfort, light levels, airflow, Part L, BREEAM, LEED, EPC ratings, etc.

Ecotect: Simulation and building energy analysis software appropriate for new and existing buildings; analysis includes: whole building energy, thermal performance, water usage and cost evaluation, solar radiation, daylighting, shadows and reflections.

Autodesk Project Vasari: Project Vasari is focused on conceptual building design using both geometric and parametric modeling. It supports performance-based design via integrated energy modeling and analysis features.

Green Building Studio: Simulation and building energy analysis software appropriate for new and existing buildings; analysis includes: whole building energy analysis, design alternatives analysis, detailed weather analysis, carbon emissions reporting, daylighting, water usage and costs, ENERGY STAR™ scoring, and natural ventilation potential.

DOE COMcheck: Commercial compliance assessment software for the Building Energy Codes Program.

FloVENT (computational fluid dynamics): FloVENT® is a powerful Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software that predicts 3D airflow, heat transfer, contamination distribution and comfort indices in and around buildings of all types and sizes.

Retscreen (renewable energy calculator): Excel-based clean energy project analysis software tool that helps decision makers quickly and inexpensively determine the technical and financial viability of potential renewable energy, energy efficiency and cogeneration projects.

Eastern Panhandle Low Impact Development - Tools and Calculators: In addition to a variety of LID evaluation tools and resources provided on this website are a particularly useful set of calculators - the whole life cost (WLC) models. These calculators are a set of spreadsheet tools that have been developed to facilitate a whole life costing approach for stormwater BMPs and LID practices, including estimation of capital costs as well as operation and maintenance costs.

Architecture 2030: The 2030 Challenge is a voluntary performance-based target to incrementally reduce fossil fuel consumption for new and existing buildings with the goal to become and Carbon-neutral by 2030 (using no fossil fuel GHG emitting energy to operate). These targets may be accomplished by implementing innovative sustainable design strategies, generating on-site renewable power and/or purchasing (20% maximum) renewable energy.

EERE Weather Data: Weather data for more than 2100 locations arranged by World Meteorological Organization region and Country. File formats include EnergyPlus weather files (EPW), a summary report on the data (STAT), and an ASHRAE Design Conditions Design Day Data file (DDY).
